Character Guest Post: Clarence the Snail of Sybrina Durant's CLEO CAN TIE A BOW #characterday

Today is character guest post day! We have Clarence the Snail from Sybrina Durant's new children's book, CLEO CAN TIE A BOW. Enjoy!

“Hello! - Name’s Clarence. Yeah, I’m the little short guy -  the one trying to stay out from under everyone’s hooves and paws. Luckily Birdy prefers worms to snails so I’m safe from her beak and claws, too.

Birdy and I live in Tie-Land Forest with Doey and  Foxy.  Recently we’ve all made a new friend. Her name is Bunny.

Poor little rabbit had quite a scare when she first arrived all bedraggled with leaves and twigs in her ear fur. That first day, she actually thought Foxy was going to eat her! Ha! Everyone around here knows Foxy is a vegetarian but Bunny didn’t know it, then.

In fact, she didn’t know much of nothin’ about the big, wide world - being from the city and all. She spent most of her younger years living with a bunch of rabbits just like her…all of them spending most of their time in wire cages.  I don’t even want to imagine how dreadful that must have been. . .it’s no way to learn survival skills, I tell ya.

Anyhoo, the first time I ever laid eyeballs on Bunny, she was a mess. She didn’t even know how to keep her ears from dragging the ground. Their tips were full of twigs and leaves and all kinds of other debris. Luckily Foxy got right on it. She’s like some magical bee-you-tishion or something. . .and before I could say ‘razamataz and all that jazz’ - she fixed that pitiful Bunny’s raggedy ears right up. With those little fingery-toes on her paws a’flyin, Foxy maneuvered those extra-long ears into a big beautiful floppy bow.  We were all impressed with her skills and Bunny was so happy that that’s how she wears them every day now.  It's the cutest thing you ever did see. That girly-look perfectly suits her sweet personality, too.

Oh my, look at the time.  It’s been nice chatting with you but it’s time for me to skedaddle.  I don’t want to be late to the picnic!”

Cleo can tie a bow. She learned what she knows from a rabbit and a fox. They can teach your child how to tie a bow, too. This fun picture book is intended to be a family bonding parent-child activity. It’s a great way to learn to tie shoe laces.

Cleo Can Tie A Bow: A Rabbit and Fox Story is an educational picture book for children written by Sybrina Durant and illustrated by Pumudi Gardiyawasam. Cleo loves bows! All of her shoes have bows, and she always has a bow in her hair. If you look at her dress, you’ll notice that it has a bow and a sash around her waist. Even her fingernails are decorated with little bows. And her bedroom? Yes, you guessed it. There are bows everywhere — on the bed, on the curtains over her windows; even her stuffed bunny’s ears are tied into a bow. Cleo learned all about tying bows from a story about a rabbit with very long, droopy ears and the friendly fox who had the perfect solution.

Sybrina Durant’s Cleo Can Tie A Bow: A Rabbit and Fox Story is two stories within a story. Children are introduced to Cleo who then introduces the story about how she learned to tie a bow. In her introduction to the book, Durant recommends that parents share the story with their children, so they can learn to tie a bow along with Cleo. She suggests using long ribbons to simulate the fox’s moves or shoelaces. Both stories are engaging and fun to read, and the instructions given by the fox work quite well. I was pleased to note the author cautions that, despite the storyline, one must never practice bow tying moves on a real bunny. Pumudi Gardiyawasam’s colorful and fun illustrations work quite well with the story, and the profusion of bows on Cleo’s wardrobe, room, and bunny will entice young readers to try their own hands at tying a bow. The author also provides a link for a video version and the “Cleo can tie a bow song.” Cleo Can Tie A Bow: A Rabbit and Fox Story is highly recommended.
