Character Guest Post: Nathan Adler of Evy Journey's THE GOLDEN MANUSCRIPTS: A NOVEL #characterday

Today is character guest post day! We have Nathan Adler from Evy Journey's new women's fiction/historical fiction/mystery, THE GOLDEN MANUSCRIPTS: A NOVEL. Enjoy!

My name is Nathan Adler, the other seeker of truth about stolen illuminated manuscripts. I grew up a spoiled brat, the only son of two doctors who specialized in fields that have paid them well. And, of course, they expected me to follow in their footsteps.

I played along. It was easier to do so than to argue that I preferred to explore and discover where my passion lies. Yes, I played along, but I waged a quiet rebellion by taking classes outside the required coursework for medicine. It is in these classes that a fascination for art emerged. Not as an art practitioner, but one interested in its history, and what it is about art that draws people to the extent that they’re willing to spend fortunes to acquire certain artworks.

I heeded an itch to write about art. Reworking a couple of papers I had written for art classes, I submitted them to an online art journal, and was surprised to have them accepted. And the journal paid me for them. I was, by then, supposed to apply for residency in my chosen specialty, but I balked—I told my parents I didn’t want to be a doctor. That I was more interested in art.

Not much of an argument followed. They told me in no uncertain terms that I could do as I pleased, but they weren’t going to support me in my choice. Then, they cut off any financial support. I managed somehow and finally became a man in control of my destiny, at least as much as this intractable world would allow us.

Anyway, I did eventually finish my medical degree and I now work part-time as a doctor. The rest of the time I devote to my interests in art and I write about it. I’m not the only doctor I know who lives a kind of split life. I met someone who’s been doing this longer than I have. He’s a part-time psychiatrist and an actor in stage plays. He’s having the time of his life.

Title: The Golden Manuscripts: A Novel
Author: Evy Journey
Publisher: Evy Journey
Pages: 360
Genre: Women's Fiction/Historical Fiction/Mystery

A young woman of Asian/American parentage has lived in seven different countries and is anxious to find a place she could call home. An unusual sale of rare medieval manuscripts sends her and Nathan—an art journalist who moonlights as a doctor—on a quest into the dark world of stolen art.  For Clarissa, these ancient manuscripts elicit cherished memories of children’s picture books her mother read to her, nourishing a passion for art.  When their earnest search for clues whisper of old thieves and lead to the unexpected, they raise more questions about an esoteric sometimes unscrupulous art world that defy easy answers.   Will this quest reward Clarissa with the sense of home she longs for? This cross-genre literary tale of self-discovery, art mystery, travel, and love is based on the actual theft by an American soldier of illuminated manuscripts during World War II.
