Interview with Historical Romance Author A.S. Fenichel

A.S. Fenichel gave up a successful IT career in New York City to follow her husband to Texas and pursue her lifelong dream of being a professional writer. She's never looked back.

A.S. adores writing stories filled with love, passion, desire, magic and maybe a little mayhem tossed in for good measure. Books have always been her perfect escape and she still relishes diving into one and staying up all night to finish a good story.

Originally from New York, she grew up in New Jersey, and now lives in Missouri with her real life hero, her wonderful husband. When not reading or writing she enjoys cooking, travel, history, and puttering in her garden.

Can you tell us what your new book is about?

A Lady’s Past is about Jacques Laurent, a Frenchman who has escaped France to live and prosper in England. He finds a mysterious woman (Diana) on the road to London in a snowstorm and unable to leave her behind, rescues her. Then, he can’t seem to get her out of his head or his heart.

Diana is a brilliant scientist like her father. She escaped a French prison where her parents were killed and is just trying to stay alive and out of the clutches of the French. Being found by Jacques and brought to the Everton Domestic Society wasn’t in her plans, but everyone is so kind and she could use a little kindness.

Can you tell us a little about your main and supporting characters?

Jacques has been burned by love in the past. In fact, he nearly lost his life because of a scheming ex-fiancĂŠe. He is not in the market for a love affair, and certainly not one with a woman with a complicated past.

Diana has had a rough go of it. She’s been in places and seen things that nice young ladies should never see. She’s needs some tenderness, but really has no idea how to receive it.

The Everton Domestic Society is a place where women can avoid marriage by taking reasonable and acceptable employment. It’s a safe haven and Lord Rupert and Lady Jane are fiercely protective of the Ladies they consider family.

Your book is set in 19th Century London. Can you tell us why you chose this location in particular?

All the strife with Napoleon is the perfect backdrop to this particular story. Much like Jane Austen’s Persuasion, the war creates a lot of drama and there is so much great history to be pulled from.

How long did it take you to write your book?

In general, writing a book of this length takes three months from plotting to my initial edit. Then it gets sent off to my editor.

What has been the most pivotal point of your writing life?
I was first published in 2011 and that was a really big deal. I think the day I decided I wanted to keep writing Historical Romance and give all other genres was a BIG deal. I love all romance, but writing historical and particularly Georgian is my sweet spot.

What kind of advice would you give other historical romance authors?

Be sure to do your research and know the rules, but also break a few rules. Be clever and don’t pretend you haven’t broken a rule, but make it work within your story.
