Character Guest Post: Mildred of W.L. Brooks' CROSSING A FINE LINE #characterday

Today is character guest post day! We have Mildred from W.L. Brooks' new romantic suspense, CROSSING A FINE LINE. Enjoy!

Welcome to McKays. Why don’t you take a seat here at the counter, and I’ll pour you a glass of sweet tea to start? Name’s Mildred, and I’ll be serving you today. You one of them reporters from the city? We’ve got a lot of y’all coming through here since we had those murders all them years ago, but we here in Blue Creek tend to let the dead lie. How about some lunch?

How’s that taste to ya? Good. Oh, yeah, I’ve known the McKay girls since Pops adopted them nearly twenty years ago now. There’s nothing wrong with those girls, and they were raised right. And yes, I know this town is rumored to have swept a lot under the proverbial rug, but maybe it’s not our secrets that shape us, you know? Y’all are always trying to stir the pot. What good comes from unearthing the past? None, that’s what. Now you eat up, and I’ll check on you in a bit.

Do you want some dessert? The boss and her brother-in-law make some tasty treats. I’ll get you a slice of pie. Here you go. Want some coffee to go with it? Cream? Sugar? Heard about that too, did you? We had a former sheriff’s deputy go missing last year, but they found her. Probably what brought you here, huh? It was hard to swallow the truth behind that mask—whoever would have thought? Anyway, I’m getting away from myself. Would you like anything else? More coffee?

Here’s the tab. Yeah, that’s Sheriff Noah Reed, who just walked in. You can talk to him if you want, but he won’t say much. Most people ‘round here aren’t too happy with him, seeing as how he brought Fletcher in for questioning. Those two have been enemies for as long as I can remember, but sometimes I wonder… What? Sorry. Yes, Fletcher McKay was the one kidnapped. She’s a strong woman, let me tell you, but she’s often crossing a fine line between—oh, listen to me going on, let me get you your change. No change? Thank you, and thanks for stopping into McKay’s diner. Have a great day.

Fletcher is undoubtedly Sheriff Noah Reed’s nemesis. Their discord began with an irrevocable outcome of an unforeseeable trauma, but duty demands he keeps her safe. The closer he gets, the more his loathing turns to lust.

Devastated by loss, Fletcher agrees to go into Noah’s protective custody. Passion takes them across the boundaries of their animosity, but is their tentative bond enough? Or is the line between love and hate, as with life and death, fixed.
