Friends and family, including my police family, all say that I'm tough. But, I'll let you in on a little secret. I'm not as tough as they say. Believe me, things scare me. I've learned how to confront fear and move through it. Basically, my motto is 'if you're scared just go ahead and do it anyway'.
I did two tours in Afghanistan and it was the scariest experience of my life. I was a military explosives K9 handler with my faithful German shepherd Cisco. I learned how to manage fear and I had the best team that always had my back. I consider myself extremely lucky that I've had these experiences because I would have never known what it was like to have this type of family or to confront fear head on.
I'm sure you're wondering why I became a police officer. Right? Well, there are several reasons, but the main driving force was the murder of my best friend, Jenny, when I was twelve years old. It was definitely an important defining moment in my life. I was young. I felt helpless. And I vowed that I would do whatever it took to make a difference in crime. So I joined the Sacramento Police Department and then enlisted in the Army. As I was honorably discharged and back in my home town of Pine Valley, I was trying to find my way and struggling with PTSD. But don't feel sorry for me, I've learned to cope and use my anxiety symptoms to push me forward in my investigations. That means more bad guys in jail.
