Character Guest Post: Yang Peng of Deven Greene's UNNATURAL #characterday

Today is character guest post day! We have Yang Peng from Deven Greene's new medical thriller, UNNATURAL. Enjoy!

My fellow comrades, countrymen, and friends,

I am very proud of my facility, Fengshou, or Great Harvest. I have enemies who attempt to discredit all the wonderful advances my colleagues and I have made at the facility. I say that is nothing more than what Westerners would call “fake news.”

The truth is we are pioneers in developing methods to perform human embryonic stem cell gene editing to increase the general well-being of our population. We are also pursuing cures for genetic diseases that cause individuals to suffer, such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, hemophilia, and muscular dystrophy. Our bold program will enable China to take its rightful place as the most dominant country in the world.

Despite our work being difficult, we have made much progress. In our quest to learn the best techniques to perform this procedure, some of the genetically altered children born have been affected by what we call “unintended consequences.” This cannot be avoided. Westerners say we should stop our program and wait for scientists to perfect the techniques so they can be performed safely 100% of the time.

I ask you, how many years are you willing to wait before reaping the benefits of this powerful technology? While we wait for the perfect time to start using this remarkable, life-changing procedure, how many people will suffer or die because of the delay? I say we should continue our program using the best techniques we have developed so far, potentially helping thousands or millions. A few people may suffer from treatment side-effects, such as blindness, brain damage, tumors, or death, but that is a small price to pay.

Only those with decadent Western values don’t see the foolishness of protecting a few at the expense of society as a whole. For our society, any society, to move forward, we must stay focused on the masses and never allow concerns for a few get in the way of benefitting the population as a whole.

I hope you will join me in supporting our important program. I am confident that those few who suffer from unintended consequences of gene editing share my view, and are happy to contribute to the advancement of society, even at the expense of their own health.

PRAISE

A compelling and richly woven story, perfect for those looking for their new favorite thriller!

The UC San Francisco pediatric clinic is a lively and bustling facility where every sort of injury and infirmity has been seen, diagnosed and treated. That is, until the day a Chinese migrant named Ting brings her daughter in for an evaluation. The striking girl is truly an anomaly, bearing genetically impossible bright blue eyes. Dr. Erica Rosen presses Ting for information, but Ting is paranoid, evasive and overly protective of her family’s privacy. Things become more puzzling when Ting ends up in the ER with a wounded young son and insists that someone is trying to kill the boy. Shocking test results, a second attempt on the boy’s life and a missing phlebotomist are just the beginning of a riveting tale of government conspiracy, medical mystery and dangerous close-calls.

Unnatural is a flawlessly written medical thriller that focuses on a Chinese mother who will sacrifice everything to save her children. Erica is a bold protagonist who follows her instincts to some amazing discoveries. The narrative is driven by intelligent dialogue and a clever, yet heinous, plot. The cultural aspects between Ting and Erica feel authentic and the technical medical language is just complicated enough to feel genuine without becoming difficult to read. Deven Greene has created a truly gripping international thriller with just the right amount of humanity and compassion.  Unnatural, the first in the Erica Rosen MD Trilogy, is a compelling and richly woven story, perfect for those looking for a new favorite thriller!
